Inside Rumfa Nursery: Growth, Germination, and Green Success

At Rumfa College Nursery, our commitment to cultivating a green future is taking root—literally. This past week has been a productive one as we continue nurturing life through nature. Here’s a quick update on our nursery activities and progress:
🌿 Healthy Growth in Our Nursery Beds
We’re excited to report the healthy sprouting and consistent growth of several plant species under our care:
• Schefflera actinophylla – popularly known as the Umbrella Plant, is flourishing beautifully.
• Tawatsa – showing excellent growth due to favorable weather and soil conditions.
• Drimin Kaya – has just begun sprouting this week, a promising start for this local species.
Each of these plants is nurtured in an environment optimized for growth, thanks to our daily care routines and observation.
🌰 Germination Breakthrough
This week, we began germinating cashew seeds using a creative method that has proven effective:
• We used A4 paper as a germination medium, gently splashing water on the paper.
• The cashew seeds were placed between layers of moistened paper inside a rubber container.
• This setup ensures moisture retention and a warm environment that encourages sprouting.
We’re hopeful this method will yield healthy, viable seedlings for our next round of planting.

🌾 Land Clearing and Soil Preparation
Our team also undertook land clearing, removing debris and residues manually using hoes and hand tools. This process is essential for preparing clean and fertile soil beds for sowing.

🌱 Sowing Satellite Seeds in the Pre-Nursery
The week saw active sowing of satellite seeds using two basins inside the pre-nursery. This controlled environment enhances seedling survival rates.
We’re proud to report that the pre-nursery is well constructed and securely netted, preventing intrusion by parasitic insects or other harmful organisms. With this setup, we expect a high success rate, In sha Allah.
